Yoga for Back Pain?

A study indicates yoga done under the right circumstances can make life better for people with chronic low back pain.

Researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine saw that in a pilot study.

Those who took the 12 weekly 75-minute classes wind up with greater ability to move, and an 80 percent decrease in their pain medications, compared with those who did not do yoga.

Caution: some types of yoga might be bad for back pain. For individuals who are pursuing yoga for their back pain, it’s very important that they identify a class and a teacher who has experience with this.

The study in the journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine was supported by the National Institutes of Health.

Gov’t Goof

The federal government defines “overweight” and “obese” using the Body Mass Index (BMI), a simple calculation based only on height and weight.

But the BMI’s simplistic formula misclassifies many fit Americans as officially fat.

Under the government standard, Tom Cruise, Sylvester Stallone, and Mel Gibson are all technically obese.  It’s not just the official category of obesity that has been affected by numerical hocus-
pocus.

Thirty-five million Americans went to sleep one night in 1998 at a government approved weight, and woke up “overweight”  the next morning, thanks to a change in the government’s definition.

That group includes presently “overweight” celebrities like Will Smith and Pierce Brosnan, as well as NBA stars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. It even includes President George W. Bush.

“BMI does have numerous limitations that we professionals have chosen to ignore, or at least
to tolerate.”
  –Obesity Reviews

So, next time you’re tempted to fall for anything Big Daddy Gov’t tells you, think twice and check with your physician if you’re concerned you’re too heavy.  Also remember, these “gov’t officials and experts” aren’t really “experts” in this field…they’re experts in using people and their weaknesses to line their pockets.

Don’t Argue!

Arguing can raise levels of body chemicals called cytokines, which fight infection. But continued high levels of cytokines are associated with conditions such as heart disease.

Researcher Jennifer Graham at Penn State has been looking at ways for couples to work on their differences without amping up their cytokines.

As part of her study, she had couples flip the hot switches on topics like money and in-laws.

Graham found that use of reasoning words during a fight controlled cytokines. So reasoning may be better than fighting, for your health and relationship – and:

Expressing yourself clearly and thinking deeply about conflict may also help lead to a resolution of the situation.

The study in the journal Health Psychology was supported by the National Institutes of Health.

Selenium & Fish

Selenium — an essential mineral found in all saltwater and many freshwater fish — counteracts the toxic effects of mercury when it is present in equal or greater amounts than mercury, according to University of North Dakota environmental scientist Nicholas Ralston. If a fish has a higher selenium value than mercury, it would have a health benefit. If a fish were to have more mercury than selenium, it could be harmful….

Of 15 oceanic fish for which Ralston has tested, only mako shark had more mercury than selenium. Swordfish had only slightly more selenium than mercury, and all other fish, including thresher sharks and four tuna species — the most commercially popular fish — were considered strongly beneficial.

That’s big news.

Mummies Had Heart Disease

Researchers examining Egyptian mummies discovered that our predecessors 3,500 years ago also suffered from hardened arteries, and they didn’t eat fast food. As The Wall Street Journal reports:

[Researchers] were able to identify the hearts, arteries or both in 16 of the mummies, nine of whom had deposits of calcification…
“Not only do we have atherosclerosis [artery hardening] now, it was prevalent as long as 3,500 years ago,” said Gregory Thomas, a cardiologist and imaging specialist at University of California, Irvine, who was principal investigator of the study. “It is part of the human condition.”

One of the researchers noted, heart disease “is as old as the pyramids.”

So why in the world are our tax dollars funding people to pick on every type of food available to us when it’s quite clear that it isn’t fast food, or meat or any type of modern convenience causing heart disease – it’s nothing more than being human.  So, consider telling your local lawmakers you want gov’t OUT of the food business.
