Women: Take Folic Acid

Women of childbearing age have been urged to take folic acid supplements, even if they are not planning a family.

Research suggests up to 75% of cases of Spina Bifida could be prevented if a woman takes folic acid three months before conception, and during pregnancy.

Children born with spina bifida are often paralysed from the waist down and can suffer lifelong spinal cord, bowel and bladder problems. Some children also have brain damage.
