Peanut Butter Update & Other Food Infestations

To date, the Peanut Butter contamination, according to the Washington Post,  has been linked to nine deaths and 636 cases of food poisoning in 44 states, and more claims are expected to follow.

Records released during congressional hearings last week showed the company continued to ship its products even after they tested positive for deadly bacteria.

In addition to the poisening problem, a recent inspection by the Food and Drug Administration discovered that the salmonella-tainted plant was also home to mold and roaches.

Now that’s “food for thought”.

As if this isn’t worrisome enough…

Reading up more on problems with foods we purchase off the shelves of our grocery stores, I found an interesting write-up by the FDA titled, The Food Defect Action Levels: Levels of Natural or Unavoidable Defects in Foods That Present No Health Hazards for Humans.

This booklet establishes acceptable levels of  “defects” for a range of food products.

Among the booklet’s list of allowable defects are “insect filth,” “rodent filth” (both hair and excreta pellets), “mold,” “insects,” “mammalian excreta,” “rot,” “insects and larvae”, “insects and mites,” “insects and insect eggs,” “drosophila fly,” “sand and grit,” “parasites,” “mildew” and “foreign matter”.

Boy, if you want to lose your appetite… One easily gets the impression these large food corporations aren’t too keen on cleanliness and the purity of the foods they sell us.

I think I’ll be making MANY MORE home made foods.
