Cutting Salt in Your Diet
It’s important for everyone to keep the amount of salt in their diets down to a minimum. For some, it may be especially beneficial to help control high blood pressure. To start cutting back, try these tips:
- Opt for fresh vegetables, poultry and meat instead of canned or processed items whenever practical. Three-quarters fo your sodium intake comes from processed foods.
- Use the nutrition facts panel to scout out lower-sodium options of favorite foods. You would be surprised how much sodium content varies among brands.
- Choose reduced-sodium soups, canned vegetables and frozen foods.
- Season food using pepper, herbs, spices and salt substitutes instead of salt.
