Z-Trim Cuts Fat, Calories

Z Trim is a healthful natural dietary fiber ingredient that can be used for:

  • Fat replacement or substitution
  • Emulsification
  • Binding
  • Shaping
  • Suspension
  • Appetite control

Previously, there haven’t been too many options for creating lower fat, lower calorie home made treats. Enter Z-Trim.  Z Trim  is a calorie-free fat substitute made from insoluble plant fibers found in cereals and legumes.  Amazingly, it duplicates the taste and texture of fat while cutting fat and calories.  The plant fiber is processed into a powder, which absorbs water to create a gel that mimics the smooth mouth feel of fat. As a bonus, it provides about half a gram of fiber per tablespoon. It’s even certified kosher.

Z Trim was invented by researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the mid-1990’s and is now available for home use.  When you use Z Trim in foods like cakes, cookies, and salad dressings, it can replace at least one-half the butter, eggs or oil with little or no detectable change in taste or texture.

You can purchase Z Trim as a gel or as a powder.  You can squirt the gel directly into batter; with the powder you must first mix it with water to create a gel.  Unfortunately, Z Trim cannot be used to fry or saute foods.

Thus far, there has only been one study published using Z Trim.  Researchers at the USDA found that the fat substitute significantly lowered fasting blood sugar and insulin levels in a small group of 24 men and women in response to a glucose tolerace test.  Blood levels did not drop as much as they typically do after eating soluble fiber from oats or barley, for example, but the response was positive enough to add one more plus to Z Trim.

On the negative side…  Z Trim is not all that convenient, nor is it all that affordable.  You can only purchase Z Trim online at http://www.ztrim.com and it’s not cheap.  One eight-ounce bag of Z Trim powder currently costs $29.95 plus shipping.

However, if you find that cravings for high fat, high-calorie sweets are the toughest to tame, you might want to give Z Trim a try.
